| I'm Sheriff Brown of Santa Barbara County. These pages explain the Avoid the 12 campaign, our County’s crackdown on impaired drivers.
Our name comes from the 12 law enforcement agencies in Santa Barbara County that enforce drunk driving laws. We join forces to stop the heartache, injury and death that DUI suspects always cause. We focus our efforts during holidays and special events when impaired driving is a particular problem, but we are also committed to stopping impaired drivers every day of the year.
Everyone who pins on a badge is on high alert for people who make the wrong decision to drink alcohol or take drugs and drive. We have sobriety checkpoints, in-city DUI task forces, and highway saturation patrols. All 12 agencies emphasize DUI enforcement with their officers on regular patrol beats.
We conduct a number of enforcement operations throughout the year and have plenty of opportunities to catch impaired drivers. If we catch you, you should know that if you’re over the limit, you’re under arrest. If you’re right at the limit, or even under it and driving erratically, you’re also under arrest.
We pledge to you that we are not going to cut anyone even one inch of slack. Our officers are dedicated, talented and determined to prevent the carnage and heartbreak at DUI crashes always cause.
Our deputy sheriffs, police officers, park rangers, Air Force Security Forces, and CHP officers have great tools and on-going training to detect and stop impaired drivers. We have patrol cars and motorcycles and handcuffs. We have specialized training and evidentiary breathalyzers and forensic scientists all focused on this important duty.
The jails are more than ready. Our District Attorney’s office is serious about prosecuting DUI.
But you also have a great tool against impaired driving. It’s your telephone. If you see a driver you think may be DUI, just call 911 and we’ll snatch that dangerous person off the road before he or she goes on to hurt their friends, their family, or a perfectly innocent stranger. And we’ll thank you for it from the bottom of our hearts.
Peruse these pages, read what we are doing to stop impaired driving, and learn what you can do to help.
And please, drive stone-cold sober every single time, no matter what.
Sincerely,
Bill Brown
