AVOID THE 12 OFFICERS STOP 35 CARS, MAKE SIX DUI ARRESTS OVER HALLOWEEN WEEKEND IN GOLETA

Goleta - November 3rd, 2008

Crackdown hits the roads again Dec. 12 for three weeks

Extra patrols in Goleta sponsored by Avoid the 12, the countywide DUI crackdown, stopped 35 vehicles and made six arrests from 19 investigations for driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs on Friday and Saturday nights.

Officers and deputies wanted to stop impaired drivers from getting into or out of Isla Vista during the Halloween weekend, said Deputy Win Smith of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Dept., Avoid the 12 coordinator.

Smith said the team towed eight cars, found four minors in possession of alcohol and two open alcohol containers along with an arrest for possession of illegal drugs.

Avoid the 12 will hit the roads again for a three-week campaign beginning Dec. 12 and ending on New Year’s Day. ??

There are 40 other similar campaigns in the state, each named for the number of law-enforcement efforts in the county, with a total of 450 participating police agencies. The California Office of Traffic Safety funds them all through the National Highway Safety Administration.
