Labor Day Weekend Saturation Patrols

Carpinteria - September 5th, 2007

Law-enforcement officers stopped 45 cars, conducted 10 DUI investigations and made two DUI arrests during a saturation patrol in Carpinteria that began on Saturday night and ended early Sunday morning.

The patrol was part of Avoid the 12's four-day Labor Day weekend crackdown that ended at midnight Monday, said Sheriff's Deputy Win Smith, coordinator of the multi-jurisdictional program. The crackdown gets its name from the dozen law enforcement agencies in the county.

“One of the arrestees was riding his bicycle the wrong way at night with no light, and
fell off because he was so intoxicated,” Smith said.

Officers throughout the county made 35 DUI arrests throughout the four-day weekend, logging no deaths caused by DUI suspects.

The California Office of Traffic Safety funds Avoid the 12 through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are 34 similar countywide crackdowns in California.
