AVOID THE 12 CHECKPOINT RESULTS - CITY OF SANTA BARBARA
SANTA BARBARA CITY- AUGUST 23, 2009
On what Deputy Win Smith calls a "relatively quiet night in downtown
Santa Barbara," officers from the Avoid the 12 campaign stopped 63
cars, conducted 34 DUI investigations and arrested only two people on
suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
One of the arrests was of someone who was on probation for DUI. Santa Barbara police made three additional DUI arrests.
A great many taxicabs were lined up waiting for customers, Smith said.
"This much alternative transportation removes yet another excuse to
drive drunk." He is coordinator of Avoid the 12.
The campaign, funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety
through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, joins
police across the country in the "Over the Limit. Under Arrest"
crackdown that started last night and continues until Sept. 7.
