AVOID THE 12 SETS DUI CHECKPOINTS, DUI PATROLS FOR
FIESTA CELEBRATION IN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY- JULY 23rd, 2009
Officers from seven law enforcement agencies in Santa Barbara County
will staff a Friday, Aug. 7, sobriety checkpoint and saturation DUI
patrols the next night in conjunction with the 85th annual Santa
Barbara Fiesta.
The checkpoint starts at 7 p.m. and will end around 1 a.m., said
Deputy Win Smith of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department,
Avoid the 12 coordinator. The location will be revealed just before
the event begins.
Saturday saturation patrols are set for 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.
Sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Santa Maria, Lompoc,
Guadalupe, Allan Hancock College, University of California, Santa
Barbara and California State Parks will staff both events.
The crackdown is named for the dozen police jurisdictions in the
county. The California Office of Traffic Safety funds it through the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“It will be difficult to park in Santa Barbara throughout Fiesta,”
Smith commented. “That’s all the more reason to take a taxi or public
transportation to the events and back home. Then you won’t be tempted
to drive after you’ve had too much Fiesta spirit.”
Avoid the 12 will hit the road again for an 18-day late summer
crackdown starting Aug. 21 and ending Sept. 7, taking in the Labor Day
weekend.
