AVOID The 12 Ends Memorial Day Weekend Push With 79 DUI Arrests

Santa Barbara - JUNE 1st, 2010

Police agencies in Santa Barbara County brought in 79 DUI suspects during the four-day Memorial Day weekend crackdown that ended at midnight last night (MONDAY).

No alcohol-related traffic deaths were reported in either year.

This total is 55 percent above the 51 arrests for the same crime over the same period last year.

“We’re pleased to take this large number of highly dangerous impaired drivers off the road this holiday weekend,” said sheriff’s Deputy Win Smith, campaign coordinator.

The Avoid the 12 enforcement push started Friday, May 28. The campaign will target the Independence Day weekend next.

Avoid the 12 is named for the number of police agencies in the county and is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
