AVOID THE 12 SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT FOR SUPER BOWL SUNDAY RESULTS

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY- February 4th, 2009

No DUI Arrests in Enforcement Event
Designated drivers ruled the Super Bowl Sunday sobriety checkpoint set up by Avoid the 12 in the area of Vandenberg Air Force Base.

“That’s the way it should be,” said Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputy Win Smith, campaign coordinator. “We saw at least 10.”

Officers from the base, Lompoc, Santa Maria, Guadalupe, Allan Hancock College and the California Highway Patrol’s Buellton squad could find no DUI suspects to arrest in the 551 cars they screened, although they arrested 11 people for driving without proper licenses.

They cited one driver for an open container of alcohol, cited 12 for a variety of infractions and towed four cars, according to Smith.

The dozen law enforcement agencies in the county give Avoid the 12 its name. The campaign will be on the road again for the Saint Patrick’s Day Weekend, March 13 to 17.

The California Office of Traffic Safety funds all 40 similar campaigns in the state through grants from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
